The second largest city in Bulgaria - Plovdiv is situated in the western part of the Upper Thracian valley - 150 km south from Sofia.  In 342 BC the city was conquered by the Macedonian King Philip II. After that Plovdiv was inhabited by Thracians, Romans, Slavs and Ottomans. It was only during the Revival Period that Plovdiv regained its glorious name of a large economic and cultural center. Special places for visits are: the old town of Plovdiv,  Roman Theatre, Roman Stadium, Djumaya Mosque, Church "St. Konstantine and Elena". The second largest Bulgarian monastery - Bachkovo cloister, lies in the valley of the Chepelare, about 25 km to the south of the town of Plovdiv. On all sides, the monastery is surrounded by the hills of the Rhodopi mountain, which together with its size and ancient spirit make is one of the most visited monasteries in Bulgaria. The monastery was founded in the end of XI centyry by the Byzantine military commander of Georgian origin. It was restored towards the end of the 15th century. The monastery also has its own museum which holds rare religious items of different times.
